In the past two months GHRD staff have been on the move: GHRD officers recently returned from a field mission to Bangladesh to report on the increasingly violent election campaign. In addition, GHRD sent recommendations to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding the treatment of minorities in Pakistan for the upcoming Universal Periodic Review of the country.

Bomb attack on indigenous students in Rangamati

At least 14 activists of Pahari Chatra Parishad (PCP) were severely injured in a bloody bomb attack in Rangamati Hill Districts on Sunday May 20. Read more....

Forced conversions protest in UK

On the May 6th 2012, the World Sindhi Congress (WSC) and International Sindhi Women Organisation (ISWO) held a rally in front of British Prime Minister’s residence in London to protest against the forced conversion of Sindhi Hindu girls in Pakistan. Read more...

Concern for Bangladeshi minorities in an increasingly violent election campaign

Political tension in Bangladesh is escalating following the disappearance of BNP opposition leader Ilias Ali. GHRD visited Dhaka in April at the start of the nationwide strikes and observed some of the protests that so far have left hundreds injured and several killed in clashes between demonstrators and law enforcing agencies. Bangladeshi Government confidential directive instructs not to celebrate World Indigenous Day

In a leaked memorandum, the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives demands that no Government support will be given on the World Indigenous Day August 9th, 2012. It is a clear directive to ensure that the Government policy of denying indigenous peoples’ existence in Bangladesh is being upheld. Read more...

Fact finding training in Pakistan

16 minority rights observers, volunteers, community leaders and activists from various regions in Pakistan completed a two-day training organised by GHRD on human rights fact finding and documentation in Faisalabad. Read more...

Hindu homes looted and burned to ashes in organised attacks in Satkhira

Hindu homes in the two villages of Fatehpur and Chakdaha were looted and burnt down to ashes in an arson attack in the Satkhira District on March 31 and April 1. The attacks were reportedly carried out by a large group of mainly Jamaat –e-Islami supporters. Read more...

GHRD submission on minority human rights in Pakistan to United Nations Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

The Human Rights Council will review the state of human rights in Pakistan at its October/ November UPR session. In anticipation of the UPR, GHRD made a joint NGO Submission on the situation for minorities in Pakistan with Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP). Read more...
