One of the area’s that has GHRD priority at the moment is Bangladesh. Bangladesh is a country where human rights and specifically the rights of women are being brutally violated. These violations include sexual and domestic violence; (marital) rape; infanticide; acid attacks and honour killings. These types of violence, in particular the gang rapes are controlling acts that repress women, especially considering the women who are victims of these atrocities face numerous obstacles in obtaining legal protection and justice for these crimes.
The Bangladesh government remains passive and fails to adequately investigate and charge the perpetrators. For this reason GHRD has begun the campaign “Stop the Gang Rapes”. The goal of the campaign is to increase awareness, knowledge and support in the Netherlands for the human rights situation in Bangladesh. GHRD also aims to compel the Bangladesh government to take action by increasing public awareness and outrage in relation to this issue. The rationale of GHRD’s goal is that when people stand up and acknowledge their outrage at these abuses the government of Bangladesh will no longer be able to ignore these horrible deeds and will be forced to punish the perpetrators.
