International Women’s Day 2019

Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) organized events on 8th March 2019 to highlight women’s rights in South Asia.

Nepal

Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) successfully conducted a health camp at Sankhu on 8th march 2019. In Nepal, despite the law criminalizing Chhaupadi practices, traditional customs prevail in certain regions undermining women’s rights, equality and empowerment.

The health camp was organised so that doctors and medical students could inform the local population (especially women) about menstruation. The challenge was to take into consideration the fears of the population and also the important of religious practices and believes in Nepal. Nevertheless, it is important to raise awareness about mensuration and Chhaupadi to create an environment for change.

The event was a great success and a great experience and we would like to thank the medical staff present: Dr. Rajiv Yadav, Sukomal Bhattarai, Rakshya, Sunikshya, Supriya, Muna, Rabina, Abisha, Anjali, Ashmita, Shilpy and Sadikshya.

The only negative point for GHRD was the inability to provide free medicines to women, due to limited funds. GHRD will not stop here and will do more to protect women and religious minorities’ rights in the future.

Sri Lanka

Our International Women’s Day event in Sri Lanka was held in Gampaha with the aim of highlighting women’s rights in Sri Lanka.

GHRD raised awareness of the common abuses and human rights violations faced by women around the world, but especially in Sri Lanka. The session, held at Lumbini Kanishta Vidyalaya in Gampaha and organized by GHRD, was a successful initiative, which saw the eager participation of students of Grades 9, 10 and 11 and their teachers. It was evident that the knowledge shared and awareness raised will be utilized by the participants for the well-being of themselves as well as their peers.

Bangladesh

Our International Women’s Day event in Bangladesh was created to raise awareness of undermined women’s rights in the region.

GHRD taught the participants about the abuses and human rights violations faced by women in Bangladesh.

Pakistan

In Pakistan, the percentage of religious minorities has reduced from 23% in 1947 to 3.7% of the total population in 2017. The gross reduction of religious minorities can be largely attributed to serious human rights violations such as abduction, rape and forced conversions. If the current situation continues, religious minorities could be completely wiped out in Pakistan over the next 10 years.

Liberty, social security, education, employment, politics, health and consensual marriage are among the many basic fundamental rights that are not ensured for the Pakistani women. The violence and inequality against women is deeply rooted in Pakistan’s history, which is often used as reason to justify the current injustice as being part of ‘tradition and customs’. The event highlighted the importance of these human rights. Women shared their stories and some personal experiences of their human rights violation in Pakistan. Interactive discussions also enable the participants to pose questions and learn more about the issues.

For GHRD, the aim of the event was to educate the public and raise awareness about the deplorable situation of human rights in Pakistan, while condemning the persecution of women belonging to religious minorities.
