Stop the torture of Pashtuns in Pakistan: GHRD protests outside the United Nations in Geneva

Tortured Pashtuns from Pakistan pour their heart out before the United Nations by displaying a Pavilion at Broken Chair Geneva – 3rd March 2020

Pashtuns living in Pakistan have been the victims of widespread violence by the Pakistani establishment. They have been mistreated, tortured, discriminated, and intimidated by the Pakistani Army. Human rights activists from the Pashtun community have highlighted these atrocities committed by the Pakistani military establishment with a pavilion displaying ‘Stop Pashtun Torture’ at the Broken Chair sculpture outside the United Nations’ Offices in Geneva.

The Pashtuns, an ethnic group of Pakistan living in FATA, have been exposed to the brutal practices of the Pakistani Army. Thousands of civilians have been killed with villages destroyed and innocent people being labelled as terrorists leading to their arbitrary detainment and torture. These practices have received the approval of the Pakistani Government.

The pavilion outside the United Nation’s offices in Geneva calling on the organisation to take action and put a stop to the brutal practices of Pakistan.

The Prime Minister, Imran Khan, supports the activities of the Pakistani military. The government has carried out arrests against journalists and human rights activists in the region. The leading figure of the Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM), Manzoor Pashteen, is amongst the victims who were arrested by the Pakistani police on 27th January 2020 following his critiques against the Pakistan Army. The government have justified this by claiming that he was arrested for ‘disturbing political order in the country’.

The extermination efforts of Pakistan against the Pashtuns are still going on. The number of people killed and those missing continues to rise every day. These crimes amount to human rights violations and crimes against humanity. If the UN does not take an immediate action to stop these brutal practices, the Pashtuns will be annihilated.

The big pavilion set up in front of the UN’s Offices in Geneva during 43rd Human Rights Council at Broken Chair calls for urgent attention to the Pashtun persecution in Pakistan. GHRD urges the international community to help them and hold Pakistan accountable.
