Hindu Temple Demolished, Land–Grabbers case worsened in Rupganj, Dhaka

Shefali Kunwar, GHRD

On 26 December, 2020, the Nukul Chandra Saha Para Temple  in Rupganj village, Dhaka was attacked by land grabber Haji Mohammed Sher Ali and his son, Mohammed Jahurul.

On that day, local Hindu craftsmen came to restore the temple; however, the land grabber Haji Mohammed Sher Ali came to the temple with his son and physically attacked the Hindu craftsmen. They were brutally injured and were threatened to leave Bangladesh. The land grabber goons also protested against the restoration of the temple and claimed that the land belongs to them.

During the same time, few local people came to save the local Hindu craftsmen from further injuries. Meanwhile, they also managed to capture the motorbike of the goons. Local police visited the temple area where the incident took place and barred it from any trespassing. Unfortunately, the police still has not been able to arrest Haji Mohammed Sher Ali and his son, Mohammed Jahurul. But, sadly, this has become a common event in Bangladesh since 2016. According to The Indian Express, back in 2016[i], several hundred people from following Islamic religion attacked and ransacked approximately 15 Hindu temples and over 20 households in Nasirnagar. Since then, many extremist Islamic groups have attacked the Hindu Minorities with an intention to kill and rape them, and grab their lands. REO (local partner of GHRD in Bangladesh) claim that no significant steps have been taken so far by either by the local authorities or the Government of Bangladesh.
