Press Freedom in Pakistan

World Press Freedom Day, a day to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom and evaluate the reality of such freedoms worldwide. Just as important is highlighting the continuous targeting of journalists in different parts of the world, namely in Pakistan. The unfortunate press freedom situation in Pakistan is darker by the day, with crackdowns on the media, journalists, and civil society intensifying. During August 2020, at least 16 women journalists reported being systematically harassed and threatened with violence due to their journalistic work that is not favouring the government. In recent days, unidentified gunmen shot and killed a journalist Abdul Wahid Raisani in the restive province of Balochistan, South West Pakistan. Fellow journalists have taken the streets to demand justice and accountability for such a violation of human life, freedom of the press, and the lack of security for all media workers in Pakistan.

GHRD stresses that it is vital to remember those journalists who lost their lives and calls for enhanced freedom, accountability, and justice.
