Commemorating the Victims of the Pahalgam Kashmir Attack: GHRD Demands Justice at the Peace Palace
One year after the brutal Pahalgam Kashmir attack, Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) stood in solidarity at the Peace Palace in The Hague to demand justice. Despite the rain, activists and supporters gathered on May 15, 2026, to ensure that the international community does not forget the human cost of cross-border terrorism.
The Tragedy of April 2025 The protest served as a somber reminder of the events on April 22, 2025, in the Baisaran Valley. During this targeted act of violence, armed militants killed 26 civilians, specifically targeting non-Muslim tourists. Among the fallen was also a local Muslim pony ride operator who died while heroically attempting to protect the visitors. This attack remains one of the deadliest targeting civilians in the region in recent years.
Voices for Accountability and Peace During the demonstration, protesters displayed portraits of the victims as a tribute to their lives. Key speakers highlighted the broader implications of such violence:
- Harry Van Bommel, former Dutch politician, emphasized the necessity of a collective international response to prevent further tragedies and address the wider regional implications of the massacre.
- Speakers condemned the attack and called for global unity and peace in the face of radical violence.
A Call to Action Under the banner “Enough is Enough,” GHRD reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights of threatened minority communities. We call upon international institutions and policymakers to hold perpetrators of state-sponsored violence accountable and to foster sustainable peace in Kashmir.
