61st UNHRC Side Event: Blasphemy Laws and the Persecution of Minorities in Asia

Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) is hosting a side event at the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council titled “Blasphemy Laws and the Persecution of Minorities in Asia.” The event addresses how blasphemy laws are misused against religious and ethnic minorities in several Asian nations, leading to severe consequences such as imprisonment and, in some cases, death. Allegations often rely on weak evidence, resulting in arbitrary detentions and violence against targeted communities, including Christians, Hindus, Ahmadis, the Bahá’í community in Iran, and women in Afghanistan. The event aims to explore these abuses, their intersection with gender issues, and potential reforms aligned with international human rights standards. Live coverage will be available through GHR TV World News.
