Historic Ceasefire Between Israel and Hamas Marks a Tentative Step Toward Peace

A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas officially has come into effect, bringing a pause to two years of intense hostilities in Gaza. Brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, the deal is described as the first phase of a broader peace initiative aimed at stabilizing the region.

Key provisions of the agreement

  • Hostage and Prisoner exchange: Hamas will release 20 Israeli hostages within 72 hours, while Israel shall free 250 palestinian prisoners and 1,700 detainees captured during the conflict. Additionally, 11 Hamas prisoners are to be exchanged instead of Fatah affiliates.
  • Military withdrawal: Israeli forces are to withdraw from major areas in Gaza but retain control over around 53% of the territory, mostly rural zones.
  • Humanitarian aid: The agreement allows up to 600 aid trucks daily to deliver essential supplies, including food, medical equipment, and fuel. The Rafah crossing will reopen, enabling displaced residents to return home.

International oversight and next steps

A multinational monitoring mission, including personnel from the U.S., Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and possibly the UAE, will oversee the ceasefire’s implementation. Phase two of the plan will focus on the disarmament of Hamas and potential governance reforms in Gaza, with negotiations expected to continue in Paris.

Despite broad international support, questions remain about the durability of the ceasefire. Full implementation, political restructuring in Gaza, and the risk of renewed hostilities continue to pose challenges. Both Israel and Hamas have expressed cautious optimism, emphasizing the importance of sustained dialogue.

The coming days will test whether this ceasefire can serve as a foundation for long-term peace in Gaza.
