Racial Violence in the UK: Product of Imperial Legacy, Political Complicity, and Digital Misinformation and Hate
Last summer, the UK experienced episodes of riots after the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport. Misinformation quickly circulated, falsely implicating a Muslim asylum seeker in the crime (Marchant, 2025). Earlier this year, in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, following allegations that two Romanian teenagers had sexually assaulted a girl, a far-right mob targeted ethnic minorities (Telford & Page, 2025). These incidents are not isolated but reflect broader and ongoing issues of Islamophobia and xenophobia in the UK.
